today’s rant: restaraunts, originally 11/4/07

i like to go out to eat every two weeks or so.  since i moved to my new apartment, i've been trying to find the good places to eat for when i just don't feel like cooking myself.  my favorite kind of restaraunt to eat out at is italian restaraunts and pizzarias.  loooooove italian food.  if they can make me a nice chicken parm, i will love them forever.  i have to go to italian places for chicken parm because other places don't know how to do it as well.  for example, i went to the grand luxe cafe a few weeks back and ordered chicken parmigian.  what they gave me was some chicken that looked like it got ran over by a steamroller or got the ever-loving shit pounded out of it before being pan-fried.  then they had the audacity (don't really get to use this word that often) to put onions in with the marinara sauce.  whoever invented onions should have one shoved up his ass just to see if his ass would cry.  i'm leaving the italian food to the italians.

diners are always good when it's late as fuck and no other place is open.  love the appetizers.  however, why, oh why do they not give free refills with sodas like the rest of the country?  is it a greek thing?

since i don't stay out as late as i used to, i don't go to applebees for half-price apps and 2fer drinks anymore.  lately, i've been going to lunch/dinner.  quite frankly, i'm a little disappointed.  you'd think that a neighboorhood bar and grill would at least know how to do some decent grilling.  i'm not entirely sure how this is possible, but whenever i order a hamberger medium-well, it's always greasy as fuck when it's served to me.  i order food cooked more because i don't like grease.  it makes the bun taste like i'm chewing through a wet paper towel.  the pasta bowls are not much better.  it's usually undercooked and chewy, like dead baby meat.

i'm fortunate to live around new york city because we got some of the best restaraunts and some of the freshest food you can find.  i've only eaten in chinatown once, but it was nice.  if you get the opportunity, i'd recommend it, along with downtown manhattan japanese food.

i've known a lot of people who have worked in food service.  please, be nice to them.  they make shitty money and rely heavily on tips, which they have to split up between everyone else in the kitchen.  if something is wrong with your order, be polite and point it out to them in a calm fashion.  if they don't take your coupon, don't blow up in their face because you have to take out an extra one dollar bill.  the last thing they need is for people to be yelling at them because the chef didn't cook the food enough.  the only time you shouldn't leave a tip is when most aspects of food service is sub-par.  there's only one time i can remember when i didn't leave a tip.  myself, my ex-roomie and his gf were at applebees in farmingdale.  it took the waitress 20 minutes to get to us.  she said she thought someone already took our order.  i guess that's understandable... despite the fact that we still had menus on our table laying there collecting dust.  she got my order wrong and got my roomie's order wrong and served us cold mozzarella sticks.  we didn't leave a tip.  she didn't deserve it.  always start out your meal thinking that the server deserves a tip.  if the service progressively gets worse, reconsider it.
