today’s rant: country first, originally 10/29/08

what the fuck does "country first" mean?  i'd understand "people first", but "country first?"  this is mccalin's (mccain + palin = mccalin) presidential race slogan, and it baffles the shit out of me.  this implies that there are a set of priorities that he wants to tackle if he becomes president.  at the top of the list is "country".  you don't get any broader than that.  what about the country?  are we busted and broken?  do we need to fix ourselves?  are you saying we're broken pieces of shit?  fuck you!  keeping it abroad and general term opens the door for lots of other weird things on that list of priorities.  i bet there was a debate between "country" and "creamy goodness" for the top spot on that little list.

let's run down mccalin's list.  country first, followed by creamy goodness, then followed up with fuzzy feelings, charmin ultra toilet paper, a gun for every man, woman, and child, and cold stone creamery for everyone.  i know what's not on the list:  poor kids.  remember last year when bush was giving his list of reasons why he vetoed a bill to extend gov't healthcare for kids?  he started his list of reasons with "poor kids first".  his first reason for the veto was plain and simply "poor kids".

add this to the list of bullshit phrases that both parties have spewed out over the past 8 years.  there should be a political phrase almanac '00 - '08, from "lockbox to "country first".

in keeping with the "first" theme, let me suggest a new phrase to more accurately depict the direction that our country is going:  "women and children first".
