emmy, sold out concerts, and vma awards aside, there is one reason and one reason only why justin timberlake as he as successful as he is. it is the same exact reason why john cena has been the wwe champion for the past year. the reason is purely and simply because he is marketable. he is marketable as a performer. can he sing? somewhat, but he's no christina, whitney, or axl. can he dance? i guess. can he play piano or guitar? i think so. put them together and it absolutely does not add up to earth-shattering, epiphany-inducing, orgasm-inspiring music. why? he puts too much faith in his producers, the people behind his music. i have music writing software, too. i can copy and paste the same 4 bars of music along with the best of them.
sadly, that is all his music is. it is the same 2 or 4 bars repeated over and over again. same chords, same beat track, and goddamn does he like to octavise. for those not familiar with the term, it's having lyrics sung low and high with no real harmony, just the same notes an octave away from each other. his music requires almost no creative thought at all. if any of you reading this (assuming anybody actually does read this) are JT fans, please feel free to disagree with me. i'm just telling you in advance, you're wrong.
he's not a real musician. he's a performer. there's a fine line between the two. dancing and selectively choosing to sing along with the backup singers or vocal track is what a performer does. playing instruments in a band and singing without a backup vocal track is what musicians do. god forbid you lip-sync, then you're just a music whore. britney? ashlee? are you reading this? if i want to see a whore dancing around on stage to badly written music, i am not going to spend $100 for a concert ticket. there is a strip club right down the street from my apartment, and i guarantee that it will be a lot cheaper and more satisfying. britney spears, ashlee simpson, you give "whore" a bad name.
